Kursort
150 years after her birth, Jane Austen is universally known for her Romance novels such as Emma and Pride and Prejudice. Northanger Abbey, however, is a little different form her other works. While there is still plenty of romance in the story, Northanger Abbey is chiefly a parody of the Gothic Novel, which spiked in popularity during the late 18th and early 19th century. The story displays Austen’s sharp and witty observational humour like none of her other novels do. In Northanger Abbey, Austen satirically addresses many social issues of the Regency era – such as the expectations of young women and strict gender roles. Moreover, she creates a main character who is obsessed with Gothic Romance novels and tries to live her life as if she was a character in one which leads her into many absurd and funny situations.
In this course, we will be reading Austen’s Northanger Abbey and have a look at how it depicts the Regency era (1810 to 1820) in Great Britain. We will learn a lot this short but impactful and iconic epoch in British history, its society and its influence on literature. Putting the novel into its historic context, we will also talk about the rise of the Gothic Novel and how it became such a popular genre until this day.
This course is for students with an English level of C1 as we will be discussing Northanger Abbey in its original version. Since this is a one-day only course, please make sure that you have read the book before the start of the course so that you can participate in the discussion. Further material will be provided by your teacher.
